At 86 million strong, Generation Y, otherwise known as Millennials, is the largest generation the US has ever seen. We have been characterized in many different ways, but one in particular stands out this holiday season.

As this article from Crain’s puts it, “For Millennials…[corporate] social responsibility is the new religion.” Our generation values companies that are attuned to social issues more heavily than any previous generation. We buy from brands that support causes we care about, seek employers that support social causes, and align ourselves with organizations that give back to the community.

Fortunately for we Millennials at SPM, this social responsibility rings true, both in terms of the clients we serve and the culture we embrace with our office colleagues. It is rewarding every day to work in an industry where charity and community benefit are widespread. Our healthcare clients often go above and beyond in their charitable givings each year, providing free care, supporting local community events, fundraising for medical advancements, and more. We are proud to work for institutions that value social responsibility and philanthropy so highly.

We also find ways to fulfill our passion for charitable involvement more directly through our volunteer work at SPM. For instance, we support the Off The Street Club, a safe haven for over 3,000 kids living in the dangerous and crime-stricken west side of Chicago. The club offers a safe place for kids to learn, laugh and play without worry. At Off The Street Club, hope has a home. Throughout the year, SPM staff participates in several afterschool programs, tutoring, mentorship, and a summer camp for the club

SPM also recognizes the holidays as a particularly important time for giving back. That’s why, on behalf of our clients, SPM friends, and family, we donate to both the Off the Street Club and JDRF. The second organization, JDRF, aims to improve lives and cure type 1 diabetes by supporting and sponsoring T1D scientific research.

If you’d like to learn more about either of these organizations or how you can donate, visit their websites.

As Millennials, corporate and personal social responsibility has become an important factor in the brands we support and the employers we choose. We hope that you will find it in your heart to support any cause this holiday season, if not one of the two mentioned above.

Happy holidays from everyone here at SPM!
